Don’t be afraid to ask for a goodwill repair. Of course this is a shot in the dark and most dealers or shops may not agree to do this, but it is worth asking.
I personally had success with this. I had a Chrysler Sebring that had a door panel that fell off – twice. The first time it was covered under warranty, the second time it was not. But the dealer did right by me by fixing it at no cost. It had been an issue with my year and model and they knew that.
Ultimately, the car was sent back via the Lemon Law when the door fell off for the third time.

Check with your local Catholic Charities organization to see if they offer financial support for car repairs. What they offer may vary by state and city. Some will help those that are experiencing temporary financial crisis that need a car repair due to a failed auto inspection.
Temporary Assistance for Needy Families
The Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) program offers low-income families the ability to build self-sufficiency. States use TANF to fund monthly cash assistance payments to low-income families with children, as well as a wide range of services. Car repairs are just one of the many options families can get help for. Each state has its own rules and requirements, so you will need to contact your local organization.
Salvation Army
This is a national organization with local offices. While some offices will offer car repair assistance, some may not. As an example, a Florida office teamed up with a local auto repair shop to help local residents get free repairs and services for up to $250.
United Way
Similar to the Salvation Army, the United Way has local chapters. What each offers is going to vary. Some will team up with car shops to get discounted rates others might give grants to at need families. Contact your local office to find out what they offer.
