Rinspeed’s Most Amazing Concept Cars Deliver Futuristic Features

Rinspeed has carved out a unique niche as a Swiss concept car manufacturer known for its visionary designs and cutting-edge technology. Founded in 1979 by Frank M. Rinderknecht, the company has consistently pushed the boundaries of what is possible in automotive engineering and design.

Over the decades, Rinspeed has unveiled a series of groundbreaking concept cars at major auto shows worldwide, including the Geneva International Motor Show.

Notable concepts like the Rinspeed “sQuba,” a car that could drive on land and dive underwater, exemplify the brand’s commitment to imaginative engineering. In this article, we profile some of the most exciting Rinspeed concept cars.

Rone

In 2001, the Rone was created. Its incredible feature was that it was the lowest automobile made, at 38 inches in height. It was also the first sports car to run on biofuel from garden and kitchen waste.

The design mimics the looks of cars in Formula I or LeMans and features reinforced body lines that use longitudinal air inlets. The rear-mounted bivalent 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine (16V) produces 120 hp at 5,500 rpm and delivers its maximum torque of 165 Nm at 3,000 rpm. Power is transferred to the rear axle via a five-speed manual gearbox.

Who needs a boat when you have a Rinspeed Splash? With the push of a button, you can go from a street-ready sports car to an amphibious vehicle that rides just above the water. The hydrofoil system allows the car to seemingly float on the water and reach speeds of about 30 mph.

Bedouin

While the front of the Bedouin is a play on the Porsche 911, the rear is entirely unique. With just the push of a button, the car can convert from a two-seater pick-up to a four-seater wagon, making it the ultimate all-purpose vehicle. The four-valve Porsche engine produces a hefty 420 hp.

X-Trem M.U.V

Rinspeed calls this a Multi-Utility Vehicle (M.U.V.) Concept. Their X-Tra-Lift feature lets users quickly load items into the vehicle’s bed with a swivel crane. In minutes, the car can transform from a sports car to a leisure car to a commercial truck. A Mercedes-Benz 5.5-liter V8 engine powers it.

Σtos

The Σtos is the most traditional looking car Rinspeed has created, but it is anything but traditional. When in autonomous mode, the steering wheel can retract into the dashboard to give the driver to have more room to read or even do some work. Eight HD cameras monitor the car’s surroundings and allow for 180-degree panoramic views.

One of the weirdest innovations is the addition of a rear-mounted DJI drone with a landing platform. Rinspeed offers an example use case for picking up a bouquet of flowers for the significant other on the way home without ever leaving your car.

The Rinspeed Squba debuted in 2008 at the Geneva Motor Show as the first real submersible car. It can act as a submarine and reach depths of 10 meters in the water. When the dive is over, it can get back on land and drive like a traditional car.

The iChange debuted in 2009 at the Geneva Motor Show as the world’s first car that could adapt to the number of passengers in it. In seconds the car could be changed from a one-seater to providing room for three riders. The lightweight car is zero-emission and features and electric motor. This fastback styled concept car offers a sporty look and drive.

Presto

The Rinspeed Presto concept car features a motor that will stretch the vehicle to transition from a two-person to a four-seater. The four-cylinder, 1.7-liter turbo diesel engine is based on a Mercedes-Benz engine and offers environmental propulsion.

The Rinspeed Tatooo.com is the first car to be named with an internet address. The unique multi-utility vehicle (M.U.V.) debuted in 2000 at the Geneva Motor Show. It is powered by a 5.7-liter V8 engine and can reach 60 mph in 5.9 seconds.

The rear features an underwater motor scooter called B.O.B., which stands for breathing observation bubble. It allows divers of all levels to dive up to 30 feet without a mouthpiece or regulator.

Dock+Go

The Dock+Go is an electric vehicle that is the perfect city speedster. The main cabin is modeled after a two-seater smart car and the rear is what the designer calls a “backpack on wheels.”  The backpack can be easily removed, changing the vehicle from a three-axle to a two-axle. Different packs were being suggested like one for pizza that includes a built-in isothermal box and another called a sound pack which features a Harman system.
